World War I
S.L.A. Marshall (American Heritage, 1964; paperback edition, Mariner Books, 2001)
S.L.A. Marshall (1900-1977) was a noted American journalist and popular military historian who had himself fought in World War I. This comprehensive history covers the relevant historic and diplomatic context while concentrating on the military aspects of the conflict. Its two strengths are the attention given to the American contribution to the Allied victory and Marshall’s willingness to make pithy and relevant judgments about participants and actions. As a journalist, he has a very readable style and an ability to clarify complex situations.
